Lip Enhancement

Enhancing the lips can give an instant impact to your face and your overall confidence in your appearance

What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are soft hyaluronic acid clear injectable gels that we use at Manara to add volume, definition and fullness to lips and the surrounding areas. We love working with clients to enhance their lips, as beautiful natural lips can really add to the proportion and attractiveness of the entire face. Everyone has different wishes, and we tend to see three main groups when it comes to lip fillers:

  • “My lips are fine, but I’d like more volume fullness and pout.”
  • “I’ve never had much lip volume, especially the top lip, and I’d like to try some lip filler.”
  • “My lips are thinning with age, and I’m getting vertical lines above my lips, and my lipstick settles into these lines. The corners of my mouth turn down. I’m really nervous of looking overdone. I don’t want anyone to notice.”

During the consultation we discuss your wishes in detail. We take photos of your face and look at your features and proportions to see what will best suit you, and we can tailor the results exactly for you. Some people want a very subtle look and others want more fullness – this is where the detailed consultation is essential.

What are lip fillers made of?

At Manara, we use hyaluronic acid fillers. These are soft gels that are essentially a form of natural sugar, identical to the hyaluronic acid (HA) that we have in our own skin. Hyaluronic acid gives plumpness and elasticity to the skin and soft tissues, and it cushions joints. Over time, the amount of HA in our body reduces. Fillers can safely replace lost HA or add it in areas that need more definition or fullness.

These fillers are safe, predictable, and can be reversed (with an enzyme-dissolving injection) if needed. We never use permanent fillers at Manara.

Our filler brand of choice is Juvederm as it has a long track record of safety and clinical studies. It gives beautiful, natural results and is long-lasting, soft and smooth.

Juvederm has several different HA products so we can choose the consistency that best suits you, and this gives great versatility to achieve your desired result. For example, Dr Eithne has a very soft filler to give her lips subtle hydration and mild enhancement, whereas Nurse Ellen (who is younger!) goes for a fuller but still soft look when she has lip filler.

What are the benefits of lip fillers?

Lip fillers are very versatile hyaluronic acid gels, and they can be used in several ways to enhance the lips and surrounding areas of the face. We don’t look at the lips in isolation: we look at the lip shape, evenness, proportions of the face, how the lips look at rest and on smiling, and whether there is loss of support, or lines around the lips.

Lip fillers can be used to:

• Add overall lip volume, making the lips fuller and more sensuous.
• Add definition to the border of the lips.
• Add volume to the top lip, to balance the proportion between the top and bottom lips.
• Correct uneven/asymmetrical lips.
• Reduce ‘smokers’ lines’ above the top lip. These lines occur in non-smokers too, as the surrounding areas lose some support with age.
• Add hydration to the lips, combatting dryness and reducing little vertical lines on the lips.
• Add definition to the Cupid’s bow area on the top lip.
• Help correct cleft lip scars.
• Turn up the corners of the mouth as these can drop with age, making you look sad or angry.
• Add definition to the philtral columns (the little natural ridges from the Cupid’s bow to the nose, as these flatten with age.

What is involved in the treatment?

Lip filler can be very subtle or more dramatic depending on what you want to achieve. A small amount can be tried first, adding more a month or so later if desired.

A very fine small needle or cannula is used, which is gentle and minimises the small chance of bruising. We use numbing cream and an ice-pack to keep the discomfort to a minimum. The filler also contains a local anaesthetic medicine, which further helps to reduce discomfort. Most people tolerate lip filler very well and describe the discomfort as mild.

The treatment takes about 15-30 minutes. Some swelling after lip fillers is common and can last 1-3 days.

How long will results last?

Results generally last from 6 to 12 months depending on which product we use – we will discuss the choice with you in your consultation. Every person is different: skin condition, age and lifestyle are all factors.

At Manara we only use the best filler products and source them directly from the manufacturers, ensuring your safety and optimum results. The temporary gels slowly dissolve over time and can be added to as desired.

We never use permanent fillers in any of our treatments at Manara as they cannot be reversed or changed, and they can cause serious problems

Why do some lip filler results look overdone?

We’ve all heard about the dreaded ‘trout pout’, ‘duck-lips’, or ‘fake-looking’ lip filler results. These are not attractive, and don’t enhance someone’s natural beauty. These results are due to poor injector technique and/or the wrong choice of filler, and too much filler.

At Manara, our medical staff have years of experience in achieving great results that look beautiful and natural. You can still have added volume and pout in a natural way, and this can be done over a few sessions if needed. We don’t over-fill or do very large lip volumes in one session as it’s just not safe.

Cost

A guide price for lip filler starts from €250.  Your exact treatment cost will be confirmed at your consultation based on your individual needs.

Before and after

Before your treatment

Before you come for your treatment, please read our standard preparation advice.

Avoiding the following medicines in the week before filler can also reduce the chance of bruising; Ibuprofen, Fish Oils, Evening Primrose Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort. If you are taking Aspirin or any other medications under the advice of a doctor, do not stop these medications, but discuss it with us at your consultation.

Following your treatment

Following your lip enhancement, the treated areas will be tender, and you will likely experience some redness and swelling, which can last up to a few days. We give you an ice-pack to take home and you can use this several times in the first 24 hours to help prevent and reduce any swelling.

Your lips will initially be a little swollen; you won’t see the new shape of your lips straight away. It will take a few days for your lips to settle into their new shape.

Bruising is not very common, as our techniques are very gentle, but may happen and may last up to 7-10 days. You will have our 24-hour aftercare phone line if you have any concerns.

What our patients think?

  • “Very welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, but most of all you don’t feel rushed when discussing your treatment.”

    Christina
  • “I was with Dr Eithne and she was fantastic. I would highly recommend her services.”
