What is Laser Hair Removal?

Eos Laser Hair Removal is an advanced medical diode laser system for the reduction of unwanted body hair. It offers permanent hair reduction with lasting results. The systems operates with a large cooling treatment head, giving it the ability to treat large areas such as women’s legs and men’s backs more efficiently, making it both quicker and safer.

How does it work?

It works by running the laser treatment head over the skin which sends out the laser beam onto the skin. The laser energy is attracted to the dark pigment in hair called melanin. It travels down the hair shaft and destroys to the blood supply to the hair. Once this happens the hair will never grow in that follicle again.

To get this result the laser energy needs to travel right down to the bottom of the hair to where the blood supply is. For this to happen, the hair needs to be in a certain stage of growth (anagen). For this reason it takes a minimum of 6 treatments to effectively treat the unwanted hair. For this reason also, it is very important that the hair only be shaved or trimmed at the skin surface and not removed from the root, i.e. no plucking or waxing in-between treatments.

It is estimated that at any one time we have around 20% of our follicles in an inactive growth phase. Hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause could stimulate these follicles to grow new hairs and for this reason top-up treatments may be required in the future.

Laser hair removal is different to the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems which uses less powerful, diffused light waves and requires more treatments. Laser hair removal is considered to be the fastest, highest quality, safest and most effective way to remove unwanted hair from visible areas.

Most common Questions about Laser hair removal

Q: Is the process painful?

A: Our fully qualified staff will treat the area with a cooling gel to soothe the skin. The Eos system has a cooling treatment head to help protect the skin. The treatment is not painful but a sensation can be felt during treatment. The sensation can be described as being similar to a small rubber band being lightly flicked against your skin.

Q: How many treatments will it take?

A: This depends on the area being treated and can be influenced by age, hair colour, and hormones. Everyone is different and it is just not possible to be completely accurate. The average number of sessions required is at least 6-12, spaced 4-6-8 weeks apart.

Q: Can all hair and skin colours be treated?

A: Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and lighter skins. This is due to the fact that is the pigment in the hair that the laser energy is attracted to. Dark hair contains more pigment to absorb this light. If the person is very dark skinned then the skin can also absorb the laser energy and this can result in burning. For this reason laser hair reduction cannot be performed on light skinned people with an active tan. Fair hair can respond but white hair, very blonde hair and red hair will not respond to a laser or an IPL system.

What can be treated with Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal treatment can be used on hair growth virtually anywhere on the body.

The treatment works through laser light being attracted to the dark pigment in hair and then destroying the blood supply to that follicle. Because of this Laser Hair Removal works best for people with darker hair and lighter skin.

What is involved in the treatment?

An advanced medical diode laser system is moved across the skin, sending the laser down into the follicles to target the darker pigmented hairs.

The Manara team will apply a cooling gel to sooth the skin during the process, and although there is some sensation during the procedure, there is no pain.

How long will results last?

This depends on the area being treated and can be influenced by age, hair colour, and hormones. Everyone is different and it is not possible to be completely accurate. The average number of sessions required is at least 6-12, spaced 4-6-8 weeks apart.
