Dermal Fillers

Reintroduce volume to areas of your face which may have become more hollow over time

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are used to introduce volume back in to areas of the face that have lost volume during the ageing process.  These are most commonly the hollows in your cheeks, temples and around your eyes.

Dermal fillers are sterile gels, which are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring form of sugar which is in our skin, and which helps keep the skin plump and youthful. As we age we lose hyaluronic acid, resulting in loss of skin elasticity, tone and the formation of lines or folds. We also lose fat in our faces as we age, and this can result in a tired appearance.

Fillers are injected with small needles and help restore lift, definition and structural support to the face, which can make you look more rested and refreshed.

What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers can be used in various areas of the face to treat:

• Naso-labial lines, the creases or folds between the nose and mouth area
• Loss of volume to the cheeks
• Frown Lines between the eyebrows
• Loss of volume and shape to the lips
• Lines around the lips, called smokers lines
• Acne scarring
• Marionette lines, lines from the corner of the mouth to the chin
• Tear troughs, the depression between the fat of the lower eyelid and the main part of the cheek

What is involved in dermal filler treatment?

You will have a face to face consultation with your doctor at Manara to assess suitability. If you are suitable for treatment and decide to go ahead with treatment, your doctor will discuss what type of result you wish to achieve. Most people opt for a subtle, natural result, especially if they are new to this treatment, but some people like a stronger effect with minimal movement, and this will be discussed in detail with you prior to treatment.

Photos will be taken to assess your face at rest, and frowning, smiling, and raising your eyebrows. These form part of your medical records and are stored securely and privately. A consent sheet is then signed, and the treatment itself takes just a few minutes.

During the procedure, an ice pack or numbing cream will be applied to minimise any discomfort during the injections. The treatment will be performed using a very fine needle underneath the skin and followed with a very slow injection of a colourless smooth gel which immediately lifts static lines.

How long will results last?

Results from dermal filler treatment generally last from 6 to 12 months, however this differs between each individual. Every patient is different, skin condition, age and lifestyle are all factors. Temporary fillers are safe and they slowly dissolve naturally over several months.

Before and after

Before your treatment

Before you come for your treatment, please read our standard preparation advice.

Avoiding the following medicines in the week before filler can also reduce the chance of bruising; Ibuprofen, Fish Oils, Evening Primrose Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort. If you are taking Aspirin or any other medications under the advice of a doctor, do not stop these medications, but discuss it with us at your consultation.

Following your treatment

Following your treatment you will feel tender and there may be slight bleeding or bruising. You should avoid rubbing the areas to allow the product to settle.

You should refrain from vigorous exercise for 24 hours and avoid having any facial treatments for a few days following treatment. Side effects may include redness, swelling or bruising. Bruising can last from 2 to 10 days.

If you don’t want to let people know you have had dermal fillers, we suggest taking the next day off work, to allow any swelling to settle down.

We like to see all our new patients 2-3 weeks after their first treatment to assess the results and ensure they are happy with the results. Most of our patient having regular treatment do not need an adjustment, but the option is always available if needed.

What our patients think?
