What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle (or wrinkle-reducing) injections are a very effective and popular treatment to temporarily reduce lines and wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet lines at the sides of the eyes. Each day we make thousands of facial expressions, and over time, these repeated contractions of the facial muscles causes lines and wrinkles to appear on the face.

These lines and wrinkles can be reduced with tiny injections of a prescription-only medicine called Botulinum Toxin A, following a face to face consultation with one of our doctors to assess suitability.

Botox® is the trade-name for this medicine made by Allergan, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. At Manara, we only use Botox® and we source this directly from Allergan’s manufacturing plant in Westport, Co. Mayo.

Area treated

What areas can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections?

On the upper face injections are commonly administered in three areas. The first area is between the eyebrows at the bridge of the nose, this can also correct what are known as bunny lines when you scrunch your nose. The second area is around the corner of the eye, correcting lines known as crow’s feet which appear when you smile.

The third area is the horizontal lines which appear on your forehead, which are often most visible when you raise your eye brows. Eyebrow arches can also be shaped and defined using the injections.

Botox® may also be used for excessive sweating, migraine treatment, correction of a gummy smile, and other specialist treatments following a consultation to assess suitability, with your doctor at Manara.

How does Botox® work?

Botox®, when injected into the small muscles on the face, blocks the chemical messages between the nerves and the muscle fibres, so that the muscles relax and cause less creasing and wrinkling of the skin for several weeks. After this time, the Botox® wears off and the muscle activity returns.

What is involved in the treatment?

You will have a face to face consultation with your doctor at Manara to assess suitability. If you are suitable for treatment and decide to go ahead with treatment, your doctor will discuss what type of result you wish to achieve. Most people opt for a subtle, natural result, especially if they are new to this treatment, but some people like a stronger effect with minimal movement, and this will be discussed in detail with you prior to treatment.

Photos will be taken to assess your face at rest, and frowning, smiling, and raising your eyebrows. These form part of your medical records and are stored securely and privately. A consent sheet is then signed, and the treatment itself takes just a few minutes.

The treatment uses a very delicate, thin needle to administer a series of tiny injections, which causes minimal discomfort for a few seconds. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes, after the consultation process. An ice pack or numbing cream may be used to reduce the discomfort. It starts working 1-3 days after treatment, and it can take up to 14 days to see the full result.

How long will results last?

Results generally last from 3 to 4 months, however this can differ between individuals, and may be shorter or longer than this. Every patient is different; skin condition, age and lifestyle are all factors. If you have repeat treatments, the results from each subsequent treatment may last slightly longer as your muscles become used to remaining in a more relaxed state.

If you stop having injections, lines and wrinkles will return as they had previously, they will not appear worse.

Before and after

Before your treatment

Before you come for your treatment, please read our standard preparation advice. There is no specific additional preparation required for this treatment.

Following your treatment

As Botox® has no recovery time, there is little aftercare required. For the first 2 hours after treatment, it’s important not to rub the affected areas. For the following 24 hours, avoid vigorous exercise, alcohol or extremes of heat. It is safe to fly after Botox® treatment.

It is not recommended to have any facials for a few days following treatment, however you can wear your make up as normal.

Side-effects from the tiny needles may occur and include skin redness or little bumps lasting up to 30 minutes after treatment. Bruising is rare but may occur and can be covered with concealer. Headache can occur rarely. You may have read about side-effects such as ‘heavy brows’ or a ‘frozen look’- these are avoidable and should not occur when you have treatment from an experienced doctor.

We like to see all our new patients 2-3 weeks after their first treatment to assess the results and ensure they are happy with the results. Most of our patient having regular treatment do not need an adjustment, but the option is always available if needed.
